![]() Only when loading from empty, due to inspection/cleaning or other administrative tasks that require it be unloaded. After that, I know it's ready to go, so I do not check every day or otherwise regularly. Maybe it's an old habit from the military, but it doesn't hurt to do after an initial load. I have an AR set up for home defense, and I like to press check and tap the FA. Unless you simply don't like how it looks. The FA's use is limited, and not even necessary for the civilian shooter, but having it present and available on the rifle has no drawbacks or downsides. There are versions decked out for hunting, with decidedly non-tactical looks and features. While a "tactical" style AR may look funny as a hunting rifle. Some people want to use an AR variant to hunt with, and I see no reason why they shouldn't, so long as they use ammo appropriate for the intended game. There is no way the action would not be cocked/made ready if you pulled it back far enough to chamber a round, and the FA assures the action is fully closed. Use the full force of the action.īut for a situation like hunting, and wishing to load quietly, it is not detrimental to use. Leaving an open 3/8" hole directly linked to the working parts of my rifles is a total non-starter.įor 99.99% of the time, I agree. ![]() I keep the ejection port cover closed, a mag in place, and the muzzle covered. They get dusty, rained on, laid down, carried through the brush, and occasionally dropped. Regarding just not installing the FA (or plug): if all you do with your AR is shoot from a bench, never lay your rifle down, the wind never blows dust where you shoot, and you're not a lefty, I guess it would be OK(would you drive a car with no doors?). If you don't use the right/left top round on the mag method of verifying a loaded chamber and elect to "press check", you SHOULD be using the FA to confirm full battery lock up. A less obnoxious method is slowing the bolt travel and then confirming full battery with the FA. All of my AR use (at this time) is for hunting and I find the sound of rack slamming the bolt is not appropriate most of the time. All the "range rambos" types think the FA is just for "ramming an already stuck cartridge deeper into the chamber". ![]()
